2010 Carstens HOn3 Annual Preview

We are so pleased with the new 2010 HOn3 Annual we couldn’t resist giving you a little sneak preview! The photo above shows Hall’s Hollow, a large layout diorama by Sam Swanson. Sam, a frequent On30 Annual contributor, is also the builder of an extensive HO and HOn3 logging and coal mining layout, and here he presents his “Tips on Planning and Assembling a Large Layout Diorama.”

A former West Side Lumber Co. Shay No. 10 herding a log train on Burton and Patricia Maxwell’s West Side Lumber Co. layout. They have envisioned the West Side being purchased in 1963 by a company called Coastal Exteriors, and continuing to operate. The Maxwell’s take us on a rail speeder tour of their amazing layout, which includes the working log loaders featured in the 2009 HOn3 Annual.Nothing says “South Park” like the far-famed Mason Bogies, and expert locomotive rebuilder Juan Carlos Zuloaga shows us how he took a tired PFM import from the 1970’s and rebuilt it into the beautiful and prototypically accurate model you see here.

Finally, who doesn’t love the famed Rio Grande Southern? Most of us don’t have the space to model it, right? Not so fast! Bill Iwan shows us how he built a very convincing version of both Ophir and Vance Jct. in only a 3’ by 6’ space. The results are simply amazing, and the methods can be applied to any layout design project.
